Top Ten Revelations - The creative emphasis on all media

For our final for Electronic Media Writing we have to talk about 10 prominent revelations that we think individually changed our idea about media. I learned a lot in this coarse through various amounts of media. Therefore it was hard to just pick 10 revelations to talk about.

REVELATION #1 - PERSONALITY OF WRITINGS MUST REACH OUT TO THE AUDIENCE.
If the personality for any type of writing doesn’t reach out to a certain audience then who will actually keep buying it. For example, the goal of a newspaper is to reach out to a variety of different people so everyone is entertained, or just one specific audience. This is a reason why there are many different reporters in a newspaper because all reporters have different views. Hilliard states, the writer can help fulfill the medias responsibility to serve the interests of others. This shows that the writer’s personality will shine towards its audience and that he audience in hope will take the information in and reflect upon it. The personality of writings is important because it allows a person to see what the writer perspective of issues is to enhance their own knowledge.

Career wise : If the personalities of authors shine through their writings, then that will be me one day. I want to write for a magazine therefore whenever someone reads any of my material, I will want the reader to think that I am a down to earth person that the reader would want to get to know.I have many different personalities so I hope I will be able to reach out to many different types of audiences through my writing style.

REVELATION #2 - EMOTIONAL APPEAL = POWER OVER SOMEONE.
I have always thought that emotional appeal was based on an actual emotion like happiness or sadness while watching something. However Hilliard states, “ It is an appeal to the audiences basic needs and wants.” It is very true that whatever you put out to the public the commercial should demonstrate some type of power over a person. A person should feel they need the product in the commercial, rather than just make them sad or happy. For example, when someone watch’s a TV show or movie such as The Notebook, that makes the person sad, that means that the writing had a high impression on them. The writing made their audience think which is why emotion in writing is such an important aspect in media.

This video is a TV show called King and Queens that I found on YouTube. It is one of my favorite shows. It demonstrates the use of emotional appeal because it has funny and sad moments throughout the show. It shows how every viewer of the show will have a different reaction to every individual scene. I put this video up to emphasize that there is not just one type of emotion that could have power over someone, there are various types.

Career wise: I have always wanted to write something that means something to other people. I have been saying this since middle school. My goal in life is to write something that is published that will cause a big discussion. The emotional appeal revelation emphasized on how all writers will have some form of emotion within their writings. I hope to be one of these writers someday.

REVELATION #3 - A VISION OF STUDENTS TODAY
This was a film that we watched for our class midterm. This YouTube video made me have a whole new perspective on things. It made me realize a lot more about my college life. Not only that but different persuasive techniques as well. This video was real important in this class because it showed many persuasive techniques in ACTION. I was able to see and define how it was able to keep my brain interested. Being able to stay interested is the key to all media. For example when they hold up all the random sheets of paper with just words it draws a persons attention because there are no words one has to read and at that point it reaches out to their limbic or neocortex brain. Hilliard states that the writer should consider the camera movement as an extreme adjustable proscenium so the writer can direct the audience’s attention to wherever they think it is needed. This shows how this video understood these camera movement techniques.

Career wise: This video showed me how important it is to keep up with new inventions of media. To write something that means something one has to know the interests of society. This video from YouTube represented how media changes in a blink of an eye, along with the people of societys interests.

REVELATION #4 - TWITTER VS FACEBOOK.
Twitter versus Facebook is a very controversial subject. Some like Twitter better whereas other enjoy Facebook. There are benefits to both forms of media. Hilliard states, “Millions will hear and see what one writes due to the changing of all technology, especially if it is a form of writing on the Internet.” This shows how intrusive Twitter and Facebook can be but yet people in this world have become addicted to social networking. Twitter is new, has room to improve, is presented in a more professional manner, makes you think more about what you write in your statues etc. Facebook has many security options, not as intrusive to others, easier way to contact people. For example, I know people who have gotten job offers through Twitter, that happens not often on Facebook. I think right now the differences between the two are very hard to decipher. Right now it just all depends on the person, what style of a social network do they like better. However I will say this I think that Facebook will soon become very similar to Twitter in the next couple of years. Media is always changing.

Career wise: Shows how controversial subjects create interest and mean something. This is what I have wanted to do my whole life write something that means something. I just have to keep up with the trends of media.

REVELATION #5 - BOOKS VERSUS MOVIES?
I have always been one to read books before all movies. This conversation got brought up in class and it struck my interest. I think books allow for an individual to have a more open and creative mind. Therefore allowing every individual to have a broader range of information. A more open and creative mind is the KEY to all forms of media. A good example of this is how when I went and saw the movie Twilight, the movie was a complete opposite of the book, different ending and everything. I had a vision of what the movie would be like from the book but the movie failed me.

Career wise: I can't tell you how many times I have started to write a novel or a short story then got stuck and never finished it. I get roped into books, they let my imagination fly. I love being creative, I just have always wished I could be better at it. Writing about books versus movies made me realize that it is the writing in the book that means the most to me not the pictures within the movie. I am old fashion and like to create a vision of my own which is why I want to do something in the writing field.

REVELATION #6 - IMAGINATION FOR KIDS PROGRAMMING
Imagination plays a role because kids have stimulating and such broad thoughts that they can see whatever and believe it. However “they see whatever and believe it” could be bad. Say for example little kids watch MTV, little girls all of sudden think they need to dress a certain way in order to get a guy. My point is imagination is key; the trick is how one presents it to little kids. Hilliard states, “ As long as the characters, situation, and environment are believable then the show will be accepted.” This shows that what writers put up on TV isn’t all that highly monitored therefore, kids imaginations can run free. This can be a good or bad thing.

I chose this video because when I was little, Rocket Power was my all time favorite show. I watched these episodes the other day and realized the message it was sending out to kids. However, I never saw all these bad messages when I was little. If you watch closely and think about what is being presented in these episodes then a parent should see that kids shouldn't be watching these TV shows.

Career wise: Shows how important it is to watch what you write before it is published.

REVELATION #7 - NO PEOPLE IN MUSIC VIDEOS. IT WOULD JUST BE LIKE THE RADIO
In the text Hilliard states, that if there weren’t people in music videos it would be the same exact thing as listening to something on the radio. Music videos are only popular because there is actually something in front of someone to watch rather than just listen. In order to keep attention of media for individuals our society has become more of a visual society. For example, individuals need to see something to believe it, just like when a YouTube video is put up on the Internet, it could have been totally fake and photo shopped, but people will succumb to believing it because it is right in front of them. This is important because it shows and tells individuals how much media is incorporated in our daily lives. If one has to see something in a technological form to believe it then it shows that our society has become highly dependant on new forms of media.

I chose this video because it is clearly unrealistic. But I happen to believe there are people out there that partly believe in all this magic that David Blaine presents in this YouTube video. This video emphasized my point of people in society believing everything that they see.

Career wise: This reveltaion made me realize that I have always been one to research something rather than just believe it. I have a great imagination but I always have to think of things to back up what I believe before I say it to someone else. This made me realize that this is a good quality for all writers. It demonstrates for readers to always back up their knowledge so that people will truley believe what you have to say.

REVELATION #8 - ENTERTAINMENT INTERVIEWS ARE MORE LENIENT CAN ADD IN WHATEVER WORKS ON A WHIM.
The textbook Hilliard states how there are rehearsal times that let the director and producer know what will and won’t work. In these rehearsal times the words may change based on what worked well. It is leaner to change at the last minute just so the audience stays interested. This shows how all technology have similar basic guidelines but when it gets down to the nitty gritty of it all rules change for certain types of media. This is important to know because is demonstrates how all forms of media are similar but also different in many ways. It shows how it is important to understand different forms of media to their full extent to see if its what you as an individual could want to do for the rest of your life.

Career Wise: I think that when a person can say whatever they want rather than following a script that it is better han any other writing style. REAL LIFE = GREAT WRITINGS. When something isnt as scripted it usually presents itself better to all viewers.

REVELATION #9 - CAN YOU TEACH CREATIVE WRITING?
I feel as though everyone is creative in some form or another. I decided to have this, as one of my revelations because I think creative thinking is the basis of everything a person does. One doesn’t have to be creative in just writing they can be creative in other things. Therefore can you teach creative writing? I think so, to an extent. Every individual in this world is born with creativity, but it is the teachers who enhance how good their creativity becomes. Creativity is surrounding the universe; therefore some form of teaching must be involved.

Career wise: Every individual has there own creative story. Everyone lives in a bubble of creativity. Everyones life experiences and lessons demonstrate creativity. Therefore creativity will be present in everything I do.

REVELATION #10 - CAREER OPPORTUNITIES WILL ALWAYS BE INCREASING
There will always be things moving onto the Internet on a regular basis, it is just the act of getting there through technology. For example, MySpace lead to Facebook and Facebook led to Twitter, social networking plus other forms of media build off of each other. This shows that media is a never-ending chain. Something with blogging and magazines is what I am interested in. If it transfers to the Internet it will be really reassuring for my career goals.
