Three specific observations of the news story:
1) The reporter is the main voice throughout the story, however they make sure to have other input from eye witnesses, which they wouldn't have in a commercial. The "ums" when the eye witness is talking about the whale makes the story seem more real.
2) The lead starts off with the 5 W's, which is how every news story should be just like what Hilliard stated in the book.
3) There is a lot of zooming in and zooming out of the story, which in a commercial the view of it usually stays the same. There isn't much variety in commercials, where as in news stories, especially this one, they try to get the reader involved and interested in what the reporter is saying.

EXCELLENT blogging and analysis here, Sarah.
ReplyDeleteWhat a story!
No music - I wonder why? (Cue the "happy killer whale" musical score...)
And I HAVE to ask - is this REALLY "hard news"? I'd say NO, but a fascinating soft/"human interest" story nonetheless...
